Saadat Hasan Manto

Saadat Hasan Manto, born on May 11, 1912, in Punjab, was a prolific Pakistani writer, playwright, and novelist, celebrated as the greatest short-story author in Urdu literature. His literary career began in 1933 during the British colonial era and continued until his untimely death in 1955, shortly after the partition of India.

Writing primarily in Urdu, Manto's impressive oeuvre includes twenty-two collections of short stories, a novel, five series of radio plays, three collections of essays, and two collections of personal sketches. His narratives, particularly those addressing the tumultuous partition of India, have garnered immense respect from both critics and fellow writers, solidifying his status as a literary giant.

Throughout his career, Manto faced significant challenges, being tried six times for alleged obscenity in his works—three times before 1947 in British India and three times after independence in Pakistan. Remarkably, he was never convicted, a testament to the provocative nature of his writing.

Today, Manto is recognized as one of the finest Urdu writers of the twentieth century, with his most notable works archived by Rekhta. His life and contributions have inspired two biographical films: the 2015 film directed by Sarmad Khoosat and the 2018 adaptation by Nandita Das, both of which explore his complex legacy.
