Sadako Sasaki

Sadako Sasaki was a young Japanese girl whose life was irrevocably altered by the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. Born on January seventh, nineteen forty-three, she was only two years old when the bomb was dropped, exposing her to severe radiation. Despite the harrowing circumstances, she managed to survive for another decade, becoming a poignant symbol of resilience and hope.

As one of the most recognized hibakusha, a term that translates to 'bomb-affected person', Sadako's story transcends her tragic fate. She is best remembered for her remarkable act of folding over one thousand origami cranes, a gesture rooted in the belief that doing so would grant her a wish for recovery from her illness.

Tragically, Sadako's battle with leukemia, a consequence of the radiation exposure, came to an end on October twenty-fifth, nineteen fifty-five, at the Hiroshima Red Cross Hospital. She was just twelve years old. Her legacy continues to inspire peace movements and raise awareness about the consequences of nuclear warfare.
