Şafak Pavey

Şafak Pavey, born on July 10, 1976, is a prominent Turkish diplomat, journalist, writer, and human rights advocate. She made history as the first disabled woman elected to the Turkish Grand National Assembly, representing Istanbul Province for the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP). Her journey into politics is marked by her unwavering commitment to human rights, particularly for persons with disabilities.

Before she turned twenty, Pavey faced a life-altering event when a train accident in Switzerland resulted in the amputation of her left arm and left leg in 1996. This experience did not deter her; instead, it fueled her passion for advocacy and public service. She has since become a member of the United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, where she continues to champion the rights of marginalized communities.

In recognition of her courage and contributions, Pavey was honored with the International Women of Courage Award by the United States Department of State in 2012. Her work has inspired many, showcasing resilience and determination in the face of adversity.

On September 15, 2017, Pavey announced her resignation from parliament due to health reasons, with her resignation taking effect on October 25, 2017. Despite stepping back from her political role, her legacy as a trailblazer for disabled individuals in Turkey and her advocacy for human rights continues to resonate.
