Sahl al-Tustari

Sahl al-Tustari, also known as Sahl Shushtarī, was born Abū Muḥammad Sahl ibn ʿAbd Allāh around the year eight hundred eighteen CE. He emerged as a prominent Persian Sunni Muslim Hanbali scholar and an early classical Sufi mystic, deeply rooted in the Ahl al-Hadith tradition. His contributions to Islamic theology and mysticism have left a lasting impact on the spiritual landscape of his time.

One of Tustari's most significant achievements was the establishment of the Salimiyah Muslim theological school, named in honor of his disciple Muhammad ibn Salim. This institution became a vital center for theological discourse and Sufi thought, influencing generations of scholars and practitioners.

Notably, Tustari is remembered for his audacious declaration, claiming, 'I am the Proof of God for the created beings and I am a proof for the saints (awliya) of my time.' This statement encapsulates his profound self-awareness and the depth of his spiritual insights.

In addition to his theological contributions, Sahl al-Tustari is well-known for his Tafsir, a comprehensive commentary on the Qur'an. His interpretations have been revered for their depth and clarity, providing guidance to those seeking to understand the divine message.
