Saif Saaeed Shaheen, born Stephen Cherono on 15 October 1982 in Keiyo, Kenya, is a retired steeplechase runner who made a significant mark in the world of athletics. Representing Qatar, he was a dominant force in the 3000 metre steeplechase, holding the world record for an impressive nineteen years. His athletic prowess earned him the title of World Champion in the event on two occasions.
Shaheen's journey in athletics began with a remarkable victory at the 1999 World Youth Championships, where he claimed the title in the steeplechase. He set a world junior record two years later, showcasing his potential early on. Initially competing for Kenya, he won the steeplechase at the 2002 Commonwealth Games but switched allegiance to Qatar in 2003, a decision that would lead him to his first world championship title that same year.
Despite facing challenges, including a dispute with the Kenyan Athletics Federation that rendered him ineligible for the 2004 Summer Olympics, Shaheen's career continued to flourish. He set a world record of seven minutes and fifty-three point sixty-three seconds in Brussels shortly after the Olympic final and triumphed over that year's Olympic champion, Ezekiel Kemboi, at the 2004 World Athletics Final in Monaco.
The 2006 season was another highlight for Shaheen, as he secured a silver medal in the 3000 metres at the IAAF World Indoor Championships and established several Asian records. He achieved a remarkable double victory in the 5000 m and steeplechase at the 2006 IAAF World Cup. However, injuries sidelined him from late 2006 to 2008, and although he made a comeback in 2009 and 2010, he ultimately retired from the sport.
