Saint Afra, born in the year three hundred, is a revered figure in Christian history, known for her unwavering faith and ultimate sacrifice. Initially dedicated to the goddess Venus by her mother, Hilaria, Afra's life took a transformative turn when she encountered Bishop Narcissus, who introduced her and her family to Christianity.
Her conversion, however, came with dire consequences. During the Diocletian persecution, Afra's newfound faith was discovered, leading to her being summoned before the Roman Emperor Diocletian. Faced with the demand to renounce her beliefs and sacrifice to the pagan gods, Afra stood firm in her convictions.
Her steadfast refusal to comply with the emperor's orders resulted in a tragic fate. Condemned to death by fire, Saint Afra became a martyr, her legacy enduring through the centuries. Today, she is honored as a patron saint of Augsburg, alongside Saints Ulrich and Simpert, with her feast day celebrated on August seventh.
