Saint Naum

Saint Naum, also known as Naum of Ohrid or Naum of Preslav, was a prominent figure in the medieval Bulgarian cultural landscape. Born around the year eight hundred thirty, he emerged as a significant writer and missionary among the Slavs, playing a crucial role in the early formation of Bulgarian identity.

As a disciple of the renowned brothers Cyril and Methodius, Naum contributed to the development of the Glagolitic and Cyrillic scripts, which were instrumental in the literacy and cultural advancement of the Slavic peoples. His efforts were foundational in establishing the Pliska Literary School, which later evolved into the Ohrid Literary School, further solidifying his legacy in the realm of education and literature.

Naum's missionary work was pivotal in transforming the local Early Slavs into a cohesive Bulgarian nation. His dedication to spreading Christianity and literacy earned him a revered place in history, leading to his canonization as one of the first saints by the Bulgarian Orthodox Church following its establishment in the ninth century.
