Saint Sarah

Saint Sarah, revered as the patron saint of the Romani people, holds a significant place in Folk Catholicism. Known as Sara-la-Kâli, which translates to 'Sara the Black,' she is a central figure in the spiritual life of the Romani community, particularly in the pilgrimage site of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer located in the picturesque Camargue region of Southern France.

According to legend, Saint Sarah is believed to have been the servant of one of the Three Marys, accompanying them to the Camargue. This narrative intertwines her identity with the rich tapestry of Romani culture and spirituality, highlighting her importance as a symbol of faith and resilience.

Interestingly, the name 'Sara' resonates with the Hindu goddess Kali, a prominent deity in northern India, which reflects the origins of the Romani people. The connection between Saint Sarah and Kali is further emphasized in the revered text Durgasaptashati, where the name 'Sara' appears in association with the goddess Durga.

Despite her widespread veneration among Romani Catholics, it is noteworthy that the Roman Catholic Church does not officially recognize her as a saint. Nevertheless, her legacy continues to inspire devotion and cultural pride within the Romani community.
