Saitō Hajime

Saitō Hajime, born Yamaguchi Hajime on February 18, 1844, was a distinguished samurai during the late Edo period. He is best remembered for his role as the captain of the third unit of the Shinsengumi, a special police force that played a crucial role during the tumultuous Bakumatsu period in Japan. His leadership and combat skills helped him survive the numerous conflicts that marked this era.

After the fall of the Shinsengumi, Saitō transitioned into a new phase of his life, adopting the name Fujita Gorō. Embracing the changes brought about by the Meiji Restoration, he took on the role of a police officer in Tokyo. His work primarily involved undercover operations, where he utilized his extensive experience and skills to serve the Japanese government.

Saitō's legacy is not only defined by his martial prowess but also by his adaptability in a rapidly changing society. His contributions to law enforcement during a pivotal time in Japan's history highlight his significance beyond the battlefield.
