Sajid Javid, born on December fifth, nineteen sixty-nine, is a distinguished British politician, banker, and economist. He served as the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care from June twenty twenty-one to July twenty twenty-two, and held several key positions in the UK government, including Home Secretary from two thousand eighteen to two thousand nineteen and Chancellor of the Exchequer from two thousand nineteen to two thousand twenty. A member of the Conservative Party, Javid represented Bromsgrove as a Member of Parliament from two thousand ten until two thousand twenty-four.
Raised in Rochdale by a Pakistani family, Javid spent much of his childhood in Bristol. He pursued his studies in Economics and Politics at the University of Exeter, where he became involved with the Conservative Party. His career in banking saw him rise to the position of managing director at Deutsche Bank before he transitioned into politics, being elected to the House of Commons in May two thousand ten.
During his political career, Javid held various roles under Prime Minister David Cameron, including Junior Treasury Minister and later, Culture Secretary. Following the resignation of Maria Miller, he was appointed to the Cabinet and subsequently became Business Secretary after the two thousand fifteen general election. A notable supporter of the Britain Stronger in Europe campaign, Javid continued to serve under Theresa May as Communities Secretary before making history as the first British Asian and first Muslim Home Secretary in two thousand eighteen.
After a brief stint as Chancellor, which ended in February two thousand twenty due to a cabinet reshuffle, Javid returned to the Cabinet in June twenty twenty-one as Health Secretary. His tenure was marked by significant involvement in the UK’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, advocating for the expansion of the vaccination program and the easing of public health restrictions. However, he resigned on July fifth, twenty twenty-two, amid a government crisis that led to Boris Johnson's resignation.
In the wake of his resignation, Javid briefly sought to replace Johnson in the Conservative Party leadership election but withdrew before being nominated. He later endorsed Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak in subsequent leadership contests. Javid concluded his parliamentary career by standing down as an MP in the two thousand twenty-four general election and was honored as a Knight Bachelor in the New Year Honours of twenty twenty-four for his contributions to public service. Since July twenty twenty-five, he has served as the chair of the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust.
