Between nineteen ninety-two and nineteen ninety-four, Gunnell dominated the international athletics scene, securing gold medals in every major competition available to her. Her accolades include victories at the Olympic Games, World Championships, European Championships, Commonwealth Games, Goodwill Games, IAAF World Cup, and European Cup. During this time, she not only claimed these prestigious titles but also shattered the British, European, and World records in her event.

Gunnell holds the unique distinction of being the only female British athlete to have won all four major titles: Olympic, World, European, and Commonwealth. She was also the first female 400 metres hurdler to win both the Olympic and World titles while simultaneously breaking the world record.
