Salme Ekbaum, born on October twenty-first, nineteen twelve, was a notable Estonian writer and poet whose literary contributions spanned several decades. She pursued her education at the University of Tartu, where she studied pharmacy, a field that would later inform her writing.

In nineteen forty-four, amidst the turmoil of the Soviet occupation, Ekbaum made the courageous decision to flee Estonia for Sweden. This pivotal move marked the beginning of a new chapter in her life, and in nineteen forty-nine, she relocated once more, this time to Canada, where she continued to cultivate her passion for writing.

From nineteen fifty onwards, Salme became an active member of the Estonian Writers' Union in Exile, as well as the PEN Club, connecting with fellow writers and contributing to the preservation of Estonian literature in diaspora. Her literary legacy is further enriched by her familial ties, as her sister, Minni Nurme, was also a writer.

Salme Ekbaum passed away in nineteen ninety-five, leaving behind a rich tapestry of work that reflects her experiences and heritage. She is interred at Paistu Cemetery, a testament to her enduring connection to her homeland.
