He began his football journey with ASEC Mimosas, a local club in Ivory Coast, before making a significant move to Feyenoord in 2003. During his time at Feyenoord, Kalou emerged as a pivotal player, particularly in the 2004–05 and 2005–06 seasons, where he netted thirty-five goals in sixty-seven appearances.

In 2006, Kalou took a major step in his career by joining Chelsea, where he enjoyed a successful six-year tenure. His time at Chelsea was marked by numerous accolades, including the Premier League title, the prestigious UEFA Champions League, four FA Cups, and the League Cup. His contributions to the team solidified his status as a key player in one of the most competitive leagues in the world.

After leaving Chelsea in July 2012 on a free transfer, Kalou signed with Lille, where he played for two seasons before moving to Hertha BSC for an undisclosed fee.
