Salt-N-Pepa, an iconic American hip hop group, emerged from New York City in 1985, consisting of the dynamic trio: Salt (Cheryl James), Pepa (Sandra Denton), and DJ Spinderella (Deidra Roper). Their groundbreaking debut album, Hot, Cool & Vicious, released in 1986, marked a significant milestone in music history, selling over one million copies in the United States. This achievement made them the first female rap act to attain gold and platinum status from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
Their influence continued with the release of their second album, A Salt with a Deadly Pepa, in 1988, which was certified gold. The following year, their third album, Blacks' Magic, showcased their evolving sound with hit singles like 'Expression' and 'Let's Talk About Sex'. However, it was their 1993 album, Very Necessary, that solidified their legacy, selling more than seven million copies globally and becoming the highest-selling rap album by a female act at that time.
Very Necessary featured chart-topping singles such as 'Shoop' and 'Whatta Man', the latter being a collaboration with En Vogue. Their success was recognized with a Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group in 1995 for 'None of Your Business', making them pioneers among female rap artists. In 2021, they were honored with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, further cementing their status in the music industry.
In 2025, Salt-N-Pepa were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for their significant musical influence. With over fifteen million records sold worldwide, they are celebrated as one of the best-selling rap acts of all time, earning the esteemed title of 'The First Ladies of Rap'.
