Salvo D'Acquisto

Salvo D'Acquisto was born on October fifteenth, nineteen twenty, and served as a dedicated member of the Italian Carabinieri during the tumultuous years of the Second World War.

Following Italy's surrender to the Allies in September nineteen forty-three, the German forces occupied much of the country. On September twenty-second, an explosion occurred while German soldiers were inspecting abandoned munitions, resulting in the deaths of two soldiers and injuries to two others. In response, the Germans accused the locals of sabotage and rounded up twenty-two civilians, forcing them to dig their own graves as they sought to identify the supposed saboteurs.

In a courageous act of self-sacrifice, D'Acquisto, who was in charge of the local Carabinieri post, intervened when he learned of the Germans' intentions to execute the prisoners. He falsely confessed to being solely responsible for the incident, ultimately leading to his execution by firing squad. His brave decision ensured the release of the civilians, who were spared from harm.

For his extraordinary valor, D'Acquisto was posthumously awarded the Gold Medal of Military Valour. His legacy continued to be honored when Pope John Paul II bestowed upon him the title of Servant of God. In twenty twenty-five, Pope Francis further recognized his significance by declaring him Venerable, marking an important step on the path to canonization.
