Sam Johnson

Sam Johnson, born on October 11, 1930, was a distinguished American politician and military officer. He represented Texas's 3rd congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1991 until 2019, proudly serving as a member of the Republican Party. His leadership was particularly notable during his tenure as the acting Chairman of the House Committee on Ways and Means in late 2015, where he also chaired the Social Security Subcommittee.

Before his political career, Johnson had a remarkable military background as a colonel in the United States Air Force. He was a decorated fighter pilot, having served valiantly in both the Korean War and the Vietnam War. His bravery during the Vietnam War led to his capture, and he endured nearly seven years as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam, showcasing his resilience and dedication to his country.

On January 6, 2017, Johnson announced that he would not seek reelection in 2018. Following the passing of Louise Slaughter in March 2018, he became the oldest sitting member of the U.S. House of Representatives, marking a significant milestone in his long and storied career. Notably, he was the last Korean War veteran to serve in Congress, a testament to his enduring legacy.
