Samad bey Mehmandarov

Samad bey Mehmandarov, born on October sixteenth, eighteen fifty-five, was a distinguished Azerbaijani General of the Artillery in the Russian Imperial Army. His military career was marked by significant contributions during pivotal conflicts, including the Russo-Japanese War, where he commanded an artillery division in the defense of Port Arthur from nineteen hundred four to nineteen hundred five.

During World War I, Mehmandarov showcased his leadership by initially leading an infantry division and later commanding an army corps. His valor and dedication earned him numerous accolades, including the third and fourth degrees of the Order of Saint George and a Golden Weapon for Bravery. Additionally, he was honored with the Grand Cross of the British Order of St Michael and St George, reflecting his esteemed status in military circles.

In nineteen eighteen, following the establishment of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, Mehmandarov was invited to join the government as the Minister of Defense. He served in this capacity during the third, fourth, and fifth cabinets, playing a crucial role in shaping the military framework of the nascent republic.

After the occupation of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic by Soviet Russia in nineteen twenty, Mehmandarov transitioned to an educational role, teaching at military schools and serving as a special advisor in the People's Commissariat for Military and Naval Affairs of Azerbaijan. He continued to influence military strategy and education until his retirement in nineteen twenty-eight.
