Samori Ture

Samori Ture, born around 1828, was a prominent Malinke Muslim cleric and military strategist who played a pivotal role in West African history. He is best known for founding an expansive empire that encompassed regions of present-day Guinea, Sierra Leone, Mali, Côte d'Ivoire, and Burkina Faso. His leadership was characterized by a deep commitment to Islamic principles, which he used to organize and justify the growth of his empire.

As a devout follower of the Maliki school of Sunni Islam, Ture's religious beliefs were integral to his identity and governance. He not only led military campaigns but also sought to establish a society that reflected his faith. His empire thrived under his guidance, becoming a significant force in the region during the late nineteenth century.

From 1882 until his eventual capture in 1898, Ture fiercely resisted French colonial expansion in West Africa. His tenacity and strategic acumen made him a formidable opponent to colonial forces, earning him a lasting legacy as a symbol of resistance against imperialism.

Samori Ture's lineage continued to influence Guinea's political landscape, as he was the great-grandfather of Ahmed Sékou Touré, the nation's first president.
