Samsu-iluna

Samsu-iluna, born in the year one thousand seven hundred ninety-two before Christ, was a prominent sovereign of the Amorite dynasty of Babylon. He ascended to the throne as the seventeenth king, following in the footsteps of his illustrious father, Hammurabi. His reign is estimated to have spanned from one thousand seven hundred forty-nine to one thousand seven hundred twelve before Christ, according to the middle chronology, or from one thousand six hundred eighty-six to one thousand six hundred forty-eight before Christ in the short chronology.

During his rule, Samsu-iluna faced significant challenges, primarily due to violent uprisings in regions that had been conquered by his father. The stability of his kingdom was further threatened by the abandonment of several key cities, particularly in Sumer, which had been vital to the empire's strength and prosperity.

Despite these difficulties, Samsu-iluna's legacy includes a collection of correspondence that provides insight into his reign. A total of twenty letters attributed to him have been published, with one notable letter addressed to Abban, the king of Aleppo. Unfortunately, no received letters have survived, likely due to the high water table in Babylon, which has hindered archaeological discoveries.
