Samuel Ajayi Crowther

Samuel Ajayi Crowther, born in 1809 in Osogun, Nigeria, emerged as a pivotal figure in the Anglican Church and African linguistics. His early life was marked by tragedy when, at the tender age of twelve, he and his family were captured by Fulani slave raiders during the tumultuous Yoruba civil wars, specifically the Owu wars from 1821 to 1829. This harrowing experience led to his eventual sale to Portuguese slave traders, who intended to transport him across the Atlantic to the New World.

Fortune smiled upon Crowther when he was liberated by the Royal Navy's West Africa Squadron, which was actively enforcing the British ban on the Atlantic slave trade. Following his rescue, he was resettled in Sierra Leone, where he adopted the English name Samuel Crowther. Embracing his new life, he began his education in English and converted to Christianity, aligning himself with the Krio ethnic group that was gaining prominence in Sierra Leone.

His academic pursuits flourished as he studied various languages, ultimately leading to his ordination as a minister in England. His contributions to linguistics and the Anglican Church were significant; he prepared a Yoruba grammar and translated the Anglican Book of Common Prayer into Yoruba. Additionally, he embarked on the ambitious project of creating a Yoruba version of the Bible, alongside other language initiatives that would benefit his community.
