Samuel Hearne

Samuel Hearne, born in 1745, was a remarkable English explorer, writer, and naturalist whose adventurous spirit led him to become a pivotal figure in the exploration of northern Canada.

Hearne is best known for his groundbreaking overland journey to the Arctic Ocean, specifically reaching Coronation Gulf via the Coppermine River. This expedition marked him as the first European to traverse this challenging terrain, showcasing his determination and resilience in the face of the unknown.

In 1774, Hearne made a significant contribution to the fur trade by establishing Cumberland House for the Hudson's Bay Company. This was the second interior trading post after Henley House and notably the first permanent settlement in what is now Saskatchewan, further solidifying his legacy in the region.
