Samuel J. Tilden

Samuel J. Tilden, born on February ninth, eighteen fourteen, in New Lebanon, New York, emerged from a wealthy family and developed a keen interest in politics early in life. As a protégé of Martin Van Buren, he pursued higher education at Yale University and the New York University School of Law, eventually establishing himself as a prominent corporate lawyer in New York City.

His political career began in the New York State Assembly, where he played a significant role in launching Van Buren's candidacy for the presidency in eighteen forty-eight. A War Democrat who initially opposed Abraham Lincoln during the eighteen sixty presidential election, Tilden later supported the Union during the Civil War. His political acumen led him to become the chairman of the New York State Democratic Committee, where he managed Horatio Seymour's campaign in the eighteen sixty-eight presidential election.

In eighteen seventy-four, Tilden was elected as the twenty-fifth governor of New York, where he made strides in combating public corruption, notably breaking up the Canal Ring. His efforts against corruption, combined with his personal wealth and electoral success, positioned him as the leading candidate for the Democratic nomination in the disputed eighteen seventy-six presidential election.

Tilden won the popular vote by two hundred fifty thousand votes but faced a contentious electoral vote count, with twenty electoral votes disputed. Despite winning one hundred eighty-four electoral votes, he fell short of a majority. The bipartisan Electoral Commission ultimately ruled in favor of his opponent, Rutherford B. Hayes, leading to the Compromise of eighteen seventy-seven, which ended Reconstruction in exchange for Democratic acceptance of Hayes's presidency. Tilden remains the only presidential candidate to win an absolute majority of the popular vote while losing the election. He withdrew from politics after this tumultuous period and passed away in eighteen eighty-six.
