Sándor Pósta

Sándor Pósta, born on September twenty-fifth, eighteen eighty-eight, was a distinguished Hungarian fencer who made his mark as an Olympic champion in the sabre competition. His early career was notably interrupted by his service in the First World War, during which he sustained a serious hip injury that cast doubt on his future in the sport. However, after undergoing surgery in Vienna, he triumphantly returned to fencing.

Pósta's superstitious nature was well-known; he adhered to peculiar rituals, including avoiding direct conversation with anyone before or after his matches. This unique approach extended to his interactions with the press, as evidenced by his Olympic victory statement, which he discreetly slid under a hotel room door on a journalist's calling card.

At the 1924 Summer Olympics held in Paris, Pósta achieved remarkable success, securing a gold medal in the individual sabre event and a silver medal in the team sabre competition. Additionally, he was part of the Hungarian team that earned a bronze medal in the foil team event during the same Olympics.

Following his Olympic triumph, Pósta transitioned into a career as a dentist and sports journalist. His dedication to public service was also evident when he briefly served as the Deputy People's Commissar of Health for the Republic of Hungary, showcasing his commitment to both sport and society.
