Sanghamitta

Sanghamitta, an esteemed Indian Buddhist nun, is recognized as the eldest daughter of Emperor Ashoka and Queen Devi, according to Sri Lankan tradition. Born in the year two hundred eighty-two before Christ, she, alongside her brother Mahinda, dedicated her life to the teachings of Buddhism. Their journey led them to Sri Lanka at the behest of King Devanampiya Tissa, a contemporary of Ashoka, who sought to spread the Buddha's teachings in his kingdom.

Initially hesitant to send his daughter on such a significant mission, Emperor Ashoka ultimately relented due to Sanghamitta's unwavering determination. She traveled to Sri Lanka with a group of nuns to establish the nun-lineage of Bhikkhunis, fully ordained female Buddhist monastics. This endeavor was crucial for ordaining Queen Anulā and other women from Tissa's court, who had embraced Buddhism following Mahinda's conversion efforts.

Sanghamitta's contributions to Buddhism in Sri Lanka were monumental. She founded the Bhikkhunī Sangha, also known as Meheini Sasna, which became synonymous with the Buddhist Female Monastic Order of Theravāda Buddhism. Her influence extended beyond Sri Lanka, impacting regions such as Burma, China, and Thailand.

One of her most significant legacies is the Bodhi tree, a sapling she brought to Sri Lanka and planted in Anuradhapura. This revered tree continues to thrive and is celebrated annually on the Full Moon day of December, known as Uduvapa Poya or Uposatha Poya, as well as Sanghamittā Day by Theravāda Buddhists in Sri Lanka.
