Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Sankardev

Sankardev, a prominent figure of the 15th–16th century, was an Assamese polymath whose influence transcended the realms of art, religion, and culture. As a saint-scholar, he was not only a songwriter and poet but also a playwright, dancer, actor, musician, and social-religious reformer. His contributions to the Bhakti movement in Assam are significant, as he built upon existing cultural traditions while also innovating new forms of music, theatrical performance, and dance.

Among his notable creations are Borgeet, a unique musical form, and the theatrical styles of Ankia Naat and Bhaona, alongside the classical dance form Sattriya. His literary works, which include trans-created scriptures like the Bhagavat of Sankardev, poetry, and theological texts, were composed in Sanskrit, Assamese, and Brajavali, showcasing his linguistic versatility and depth of thought.

Sankardev's establishment of the Ekasarana Dharma, also known as the Neo-Vaishnavite movement, had a profound impact on the medieval kingdoms of Koch and Ahom. The assembly of devotees he initiated evolved into monastic centers called Sattras, which remain vital socio-religious institutions in Assam and parts of North Bengal today. His teachings continue to resonate, with a large population practicing the religion he preached.

Following his death, his life and teachings were further immortalized by his disciples, particularly Madhavdev, who incorporated narratives of Sankardev into prayer services. This led to the emergence of a rich body of biographical literature, categorized into early and late works. While early biographies are generally regarded as more accurate, they are not without contradictions, particularly regarding supernatural claims and miraculous events attributed to Sankardev.
