In two thousand four, she became a naturalised citizen of Norway, embracing her new home while continuing to excel in her sport.

Her remarkable achievements include setting a European record in the heats of the two hundred meters breaststroke during the two thousand eight Summer Olympics in Beijing. In a thrilling final, she secured the bronze medal with a stunning new European record time of two minutes and twenty-three point zero two seconds, making history as the first Norwegian woman to win an Olympic swimming medal.

In addition to her Olympic success, Nordenstam has earned an impressive total of sixteen Norwegian championship medals, showcasing her dominance in the sport at the national level.
