Sarah Hegazi was an Egyptian writer and a passionate advocate for LGBTQ rights, known for her courageous activism in a challenging environment. Born in 1989, she became a symbol of resilience and hope for many in the LGBTQ community.
Her activism took a dramatic turn in 2017 when she was arrested for waving a rainbow flag at a Mashrou' Leila concert in Cairo. This act of defiance led to her imprisonment for three months, during which she endured severe torture, leaving her with lasting psychological scars.
Despite her struggles with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) following her release, Hegazi continued to inspire others with her story. Tragically, she took her own life in June 2020, a heartbreaking reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by LGBTQ individuals in oppressive societies.
