Sarah Yorke Jackson

Sarah Yorke Jackson, born on July sixteenth, eighteen hundred and three, was a prominent American figure who served as the White House hostess and acting first lady of the United States from November twenty-six, eighteen thirty-four, to March fourth, eighteen thirty-seven. As the daughter-in-law of President Andrew Jackson, she married his adopted son, Andrew Jackson Jr., which positioned her at the heart of American political life during a transformative era.

Initially appointed as the mistress of the Jackson residence, the Hermitage in Tennessee, Sarah's role evolved when the estate suffered damage from a fire. This unfortunate event led her to the White House, where she became co-hostess alongside Emily Donelson. When Donelson fell ill, Sarah stepped into the role of White House hostess entirely, managing the social and ceremonial duties of the presidency during a critical time.

After her tenure at the White House, Sarah returned to the Hermitage, which had been repaired, and she lived there for the remainder of her life.
