Sarina Petronella Wiegman, born on October 26, 1969, is a distinguished Dutch football manager and former player, currently at the helm of the England women's national team since September 2021. She has made history as the first manager, male or female, to reach five consecutive major international tournament finals, showcasing her exceptional leadership and tactical acumen.
Wiegman's football journey began as a central midfielder before transitioning to defense. Her collegiate career took off at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she played for the North Carolina Tar Heels women's soccer team. Upon returning to the Netherlands, she joined Ter Leede's women's team while also working as a physical education teacher, leading her team to win the Dutch championship and the KNVB Cup.
Representing the Netherlands from 1987 to 2001, Wiegman earned a total of one hundred four caps, although her official cap total stands at ninety-nine due to matches against non-FIFA-affiliated opponents. After retiring in two thousand three, she embarked on a coaching career, starting with Ter Leede and ADO Den Haag, before becoming the assistant national coach of the Dutch women's team in two thousand fourteen.
As head coach of the Dutch national team, Wiegman achieved remarkable success, guiding them to victory at the UEFA Women's Euro 2017 and leading the team to the finals of the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup. In August 2020, she was announced as the manager of the England women's national team, taking over after Phil Neville's contract ended. Despite a brief stint with the Netherlands during the 2020 Olympics, where they reached the quarter-finals, she quickly made her mark with the Lionesses, leading them to victory at the UEFA Women's Euro 2022, marking the first major trophy for an English senior team since the men's 1966 FIFA World Cup.
Wiegman's coaching prowess continued to shine as she guided England to a third consecutive European title at the UEFA Women's Euro 2025, solidifying her legacy in women's football.
