Satchel Paige

He began his journey in baseball with the semi-professional Mobile Tigers from nineteen twenty-four to nineteen twenty-six before making his professional debut in nineteen twenty-six with the Chattanooga Black Lookouts in the Negro Southern League. Paige quickly rose to fame as one of the most successful players in the Negro leagues, captivating audiences with his extraordinary talent.

In nineteen forty-eight, at the age of forty-two, Paige made history by debuting in Major League Baseball for the Cleveland Indians, becoming the oldest player to do so in the National or American League. His impact was profound, as he was the first black pitcher in the American League and the seventh black player overall in Major League Baseball. That same year, he also became the first player from the Negro leagues to pitch in the World Series, contributing to the Indians' championship victory.

Paige's career continued with the St. Louis Browns from nineteen fifty-one to nineteen fifty-three, where he showcased his skills in the All-Star Game in both nineteen fifty-two and nineteen fifty-three. Remarkably, he played his last major league game at the age of fifty-nine, a record that still stands today. His final professional appearance came on June twenty-first, nineteen sixty-six, for the Peninsula Grays in the Carolina League, just shy of his sixtieth birthday.

In nineteen seventy-one, Paige was honored as the first electee of the Negro League Committee to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, solidifying his legacy as one of the greatest pitchers in baseball history.
