Satu Hassi, born on June third, nineteen fifty-one, is a prominent Finnish politician, university teacher, and writer. She is best known for her tenure as a Member of the European Parliament representing the Green League, where she made significant contributions to environmental policy and public health.
Hassi served as the Minister of Environment and Development Co-Operation in Paavo Lipponen's second cabinet from April fifteenth, nineteen ninety-nine, to May thirty-first, two thousand two. Her commitment to environmental issues led her to resign from the cabinet in protest against the government's decision to construct a fifth nuclear power plant in Finland. During her leadership of the Green League from nineteen ninety-nine to two thousand one, she championed progressive policies that resonated with her constituents.
From nineteen ninety-one to two thousand four, Hassi was a member of the Finnish national parliament before being elected to the European Parliament in two thousand four as the sole Finnish Green representative. In her role, she coordinated the Greens/EFA parliamentary group in the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety and served as a vice member of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy until her departure in two thousand fourteen.
In April two thousand fifteen, Hassi returned to the Finnish Parliament, taking on the role of chairperson of the Environment Committee. She continued to serve after the two thousand nineteen elections but chose to retire at the end of her term in two thousand twenty-three, marking her legacy as the oldest woman in parliament at that time. Hassi's political journey began in the nineteen seventies as a taistoist, a pro-Soviet member of the Communist Party, showcasing her evolving political landscape over the decades.
