Sayyida al Hurra

Sayyida al-Hurra, known as 'The Lady, the Free Lady', was a prominent Moroccan privateer and politician who governed the city of Tétouan from fifteen fifteen to fifteen forty-two. As a member of the Wattasid dynasty, she was married to Moroccan king Abu al-Abbas Ahmad ibn Muhammad, her second husband, and became a significant figure in the Islamic West during the modern age.

Born between fourteen ninety-one and fourteen ninety-five, the exact date of Sayyida al-Hurra's birth remains uncertain. Her life unfolded during a tumultuous period marked by the struggle between the Christian and Muslim worlds, including the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople in fourteen fifty-three and the Portuguese Empire's expansion along the Moroccan coast starting in fourteen eighty-seven.

In her role as a privateer, al-Hurra shared control of the Mediterranean Sea with her ally Hayreddin Barbarossa, an Ottoman corsair. In fifteen fifteen, she became the last person in Muslim history to hold the title 'al-Hurra' after the death of her first husband, Sidi al-Mandri II, who ruled Tétouan. Notably, her marriage to her second husband was unprecedented in Moroccan history, as it marked the only instance of a king marrying outside the capital city of Fez, a decision al-Hurra made to remain in Tétouan.

While the exact date of her death is debated, with some sources suggesting she passed away in fifteen fifty-two and others in the early fifteen sixties, her legacy as one of the most important female figures in the Islamic West endures.
