Scott Bessent, born on August 21, 1962, is a prominent American businessman and philanthropist who has made significant strides in the financial sector and public service. He currently serves as the 79th United States Secretary of the Treasury, a position he has held since January 28, 2025. Bessent's career is marked by his groundbreaking achievements, including being the first openly gay individual to lead the U.S. Treasury Department and the first openly gay Senate-confirmed Cabinet member in a Republican administration.
A graduate of Yale University, Bessent earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science in 1984. His professional journey began in finance, leading him to Soros Fund Management in 1991, where he eventually became the head of the London office. Notably, during his tenure, he played a crucial role in the firm's success during the British pound sterling crisis in September 1992, generating profits of one billion dollars. His strategic acumen continued to shine in 2013 when he successfully bet against the Japanese yen, yielding an additional profit of one point two billion dollars.
In 2015, after leaving Soros Fund Management, Bessent founded Key Square Group, a global macro investment firm. On November 22, 2024, he was nominated by President-elect Trump for the position of U.S. Treasury Secretary, a nomination that was confirmed by the Senate on January 27, 2025, with a vote of sixty-eight to twenty-nine.
