Scott Kazmir, born on January 24, 1984, in Houston, Texas, is a former professional baseball pitcher who made a significant impact in Major League Baseball (MLB) over a span of fifteen seasons from 2004 to 2021. He first garnered attention as a multi-sport high school athlete, ultimately being selected in the first round of the 2002 MLB draft by the New York Mets, where he quickly ascended through the minor leagues.
In 2004, Kazmir was traded to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, a move that would prove pivotal in his career. He made his MLB debut at just twenty years old and quickly established himself as a key player in the team's starting rotation. Over his four full seasons with the Rays, he consistently won at least ten games each year, earning his first All-Star selection in 2006 and leading the American League with two hundred thirty-nine strikeouts in 2007.
Despite his early success, Kazmir faced challenges due to injuries in 2008 and 2009, leading to a trade to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. His performance fluctuated due to ongoing health issues, resulting in his release in 2011. After a brief hiatus from major league play, he made a comeback with the Cleveland Indians in 2013, finishing third in the American League Comeback Player of the Year voting.
His resurgence continued with the Oakland Athletics, where he was named an All-Star and achieved a career-high fifteen wins in 2014. Following a trade to the Houston Astros in 2015, Kazmir signed a lucrative three-year contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Although injuries sidelined him for the latter part of his contract, he made a notable return in 2021 with the San Francisco Giants and represented the United States in the Tokyo Summer Olympics, where he won a quarterfinal game.
