Sekula Drljević

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Sekula Drljević

Sekula Drljević, born on August twenty-fifth, eighteen eighty-four in Kolašin, was a prominent Montenegrin nationalist, lawyer, and politician. He earned a doctorate in law and served as the Minister of Justice and Finance in the Kingdom of Montenegro prior to World War I. Drljević was a leading figure in the 'Greens', a nationalist movement advocating for Montenegrin independence, and he founded the Montenegrin Federalist Party, promoting the idea of Montenegrins as a distinct ethnic group from Serbs.

With the Axis invasion of Yugoslavia in April nineteen forty-one, Drljević aligned himself with the occupying Italian forces. In July of that year, he declared the reestablishment of the Kingdom of Montenegro, an act that sparked immediate resistance. Following an anti-fascist uprising, he was interned in Italy, but managed to escape and sought refuge in the German-controlled territory of the Independent State of Croatia.

In the summer of nineteen forty-four, Drljević established the Montenegrin State Council in Zagreb, furthering his political ambitions. After the war, he returned to Montenegro and collaborated with Chetnik commander Pavle Đurišić to form the Montenegrin National Army. However, this alliance led to betrayal, as Đurišić and other commanders were ambushed and killed under Drljević's orders.

In mid-nineteen forty-five, Drljević and his wife fled to Austria, where they ended up in a displaced persons camp in Judenburg. Tragically, their lives were cut short by Chetnik agents seeking revenge for Đurišić's death, marking a violent end to a controversial and tumultuous political career.
