Selahattin Ülkümen

Selahattin Ülkümen, born on January fourteenth, nineteen fourteen, was a distinguished Turkish diplomat whose legacy is marked by his courageous actions during one of history's darkest periods. Serving as the consul-general of Turkey on the island of Rhodes, Greece, during World War II, Ülkümen found himself in a position where he could make a significant difference in the lives of many.

As Nazi Germany invaded and occupied Rhodes, Ülkümen took it upon himself to protect the island's Jewish population, which numbered around two thousand at the time. His commitment to humanitarianism led him to intervene personally, ensuring that approximately fifty Jews were saved from deportation. Thirteen of these individuals were rescued based on their Turkish citizenship, while the remainder were saved through Ülkümen's own initiatives and determination.

His efforts did not go unnoticed; in nineteen eighty-nine, Ülkümen was honored by Israel as one of the Righteous Among the Nations, a testament to his bravery and moral conviction. His name is inscribed at Yad Vashem in Jerusalem, a place dedicated to the memory of those who risked their lives to save Jews during the Holocaust.
