He served as the Speaker of the House of Commons from nineteen seventy-one to nineteen seventy-six, following a distinguished tenure in various ministerial roles under notable Prime Ministers including Winston Churchill, Anthony Eden, Harold Macmillan, and Alec Douglas-Home.

Raised in Cheshire, Lloyd began his political journey as an active Liberal in the 1920s.
