Sempad the Constable, born in the year twelve oh eight, was a prominent noble from Cilician Armenia and the elder brother of King Hetoum I. His multifaceted role in Cilicia encompassed diplomacy, military leadership, and judicial responsibilities, where he held the esteemed title of Constable, or Sparapet, serving as the supreme commander of the Armenian armed forces.

In addition to his military and diplomatic endeavors, Sempad was a prolific writer and translator. He is particularly renowned for his translations of various legal codes and for authoring a significant historical account known in French as the Chronique du Royaume de Petite Armenie, which chronicles the rich history of Cilicia.

Sempad's military prowess was demonstrated in numerous battles, including the notable Battle of Mari. His strategic acumen earned him the trust of his brother, King Hetoum, who relied on him as a key negotiator in dealings with the formidable Mongol Empire.
