Sergei Nikolayevich Ignashevich, born on July 14, 1979, is a distinguished Russian football coach and former professional player renowned for his role as a central defender. His football journey commenced at Torpedo Moscow, where he advanced through the club's academy before briefly joining the academy of twin club Spartak Moscow. He later launched his professional career with Spartak Orekhovo.
Throughout his illustrious career, Ignashevich played for prominent clubs such as Lokomotiv Moscow and CSKA Moscow, securing multiple Russian Premier League titles with both teams. Notably, he was part of the CSKA squad that triumphed in the 2005 UEFA Cup Final. His exceptional skills on the field have earned him recognition as one of the most talented defenders in the Russian Premier League, often playing alongside fellow international defenders and twin brothers Aleksei and Vasili Berezutskiy.
Ignashevich made his international debut for Russia in 2002 and represented his country in two European Championships and two FIFA World Cups. He played a pivotal role in helping Russia reach the semi-finals of UEFA Euro 2008 and achieved his 100th cap during the 2014 FIFA World Cup. As part of the host nation, he contributed to Russia's quarter-final run in the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
On September 8, 2015, he became the most capped player in Russian national team history, surpassing Viktor Onopko with his 110th appearance. By November 17, 2015, he extended his record to 114 appearances, solidifying his status as the most capped Russian player across all national teams. Additionally, on April 2, 2017, Ignashevich set a new record for the most games played in the Russian Premier League, reaching four hundred fifty-seven matches, a record he held until being surpassed by his former teammate Igor Akinfeev in August 2021.
