Sergei Krikalev

Sergei Krikalev, born on August twenty-seventh, nineteen fifty-eight, is a distinguished Russian mechanical engineer and former cosmonaut. With a remarkable career spanning six spaceflights, he has made significant contributions to human space exploration, including two long-duration missions to the Mir space station and two missions aboard NASA's Space Shuttle.

Notably, Krikalev became the first Russian cosmonaut to fly on the Space Shuttle during the STS-60 mission. His expertise was further showcased on STS-88, where he played a crucial role in connecting the first Russian and American segments of the International Space Station (ISS), becoming one of the first individuals to enter the station alongside mission commander Robert Cabana.

His tenure in space is marked by extraordinary circumstances; while aboard Mir during the dissolution of the Soviet Union, he experienced a delayed return, ultimately spending three hundred eleven days in space—twice as long as initially planned. Over his career, he accumulated a staggering total of eight hundred three days, nine hours, and thirty-nine minutes in space, ranking him fourth in the history of human spaceflight.

After retiring as a cosmonaut in two thousand seven, Krikalev took on the role of deputy chief designer at Energia, contributing to the development of Russian spacecraft. From two thousand nine to two thousand fourteen, he led the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center. Since two thousand fourteen, he has been with Roscosmos, Russia's space agency, serving as Deputy Director General and leading efforts in manned spaceflight.
