Sergei Skripal, born on June twenty-third, nineteen fifty-one, is a former Russian military intelligence officer who became a double agent for the United Kingdom's intelligence services during the 1990s and early 2000s. His espionage activities led to his arrest by Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) in December two thousand four, where he was tried and convicted of high treason, receiving a sentence of thirteen years in prison.
In two thousand ten, following a high-profile spy swap known as the Illegals Programme, Skripal relocated to the United Kingdom, where he acquired both Russian and British citizenship. His life took a dramatic turn on March fourth, two thousand eighteen, when he and his daughter Yulia, who was visiting from Moscow, were poisoned with a Novichok nerve agent, a substance developed in Russia. This incident was treated as an attempted murder and garnered significant media attention.
Following the poisoning, both Sergei and Yulia were admitted to Salisbury District Hospital in critical condition. Fortunately, by March twenty-ninth, Yulia was reported to be out of critical condition and was conscious and talking. A week later, on April sixth, it was announced that Sergei had also improved and was no longer in critical condition. He was eventually discharged from the hospital on May eighteenth, two thousand eighteen, marking a remarkable recovery from a harrowing experience.
