Barbarez began his football journey at his hometown club, Velež Mostar, before making a significant move to Germany in nineteen ninety-two to join Hannover ninety-six. His career progressed as he played for Union Berlin, followed by stints in the Bundesliga with Hansa Rostock and Borussia Dortmund. In two thousand, he joined Hamburger SV, where he became one of the club's all-time greats, netting sixty-five goals in one hundred seventy-four Bundesliga appearances.

During the two thousand–one Bundesliga season, Barbarez showcased his scoring prowess by finishing as joint top scorer with twenty-two goals, sharing the honor with Ebbe Sand of Schalke zero four. After leaving Hamburg in two thousand six, he signed with Bayer Leverkusen, where he concluded his professional playing career in two thousand eight.
