Ali Rıza Sergen Yalçın, born on November 5, 1972, is a prominent figure in Turkish football, both as a celebrated player and a successful manager. Currently, he serves as the head coach of Beşiktaş, a club where he has made significant contributions throughout his career. Yalçın holds the unique distinction of being the first individual in Turkish football history to win the Süper Lig as both a player and a manager with the same club.
During his playing days, Yalçın was known for his exceptional skills as an attacking midfielder. His vision, creativity, and ability to control the pace of the game made him a standout player. He spent the majority of his club career at Beşiktaş, where he became a beloved figure among fans. Additionally, he played for other major Turkish clubs, including Fenerbahçe, Galatasaray, and Trabzonspor, a rare achievement in the competitive landscape of Turkish football.
On the international stage, Yalçın represented the Turkey national team, earning thirty-seven caps and scoring five goals. He participated in prestigious tournaments such as UEFA Euro 1996 and UEFA Euro 2000, showcasing his talent on a larger platform.
After hanging up his boots, Yalçın transitioned into coaching, taking the reins at various Turkish clubs before returning to Beşiktaş in 2020. In his inaugural full season, he led the team to a historic domestic double, clinching both the Süper Lig and the Turkish Cup. However, despite his earlier successes, he resigned in December 2021 following a challenging period marked by poor results, including a winless campaign in the UEFA Champions League.
