Sergio Mattarella

Sergio Mattarella, born on July twenty-third, nineteen forty-one, is a prominent Italian politician and lawyer who has held the esteemed position of President of Italy since January thirty-first, two thousand fifteen. He is recognized as the longest-serving president in the history of the Italian Republic and, following the passing of Giorgio Napolitano in two thousand twenty-three, he stands as the only living former Italian president.

A member of the Catholic left, Mattarella was a significant figure in the Christian Democracy party from the early nineteen eighties until its dissolution. His political career includes serving as Minister for Parliamentary Relations from nineteen eighty-seven to nineteen eighty-nine and as Minister of Education from nineteen eighty-nine to nineteen ninety. In nineteen ninety-four, he co-founded the Italian People's Party and later served as Deputy Prime Minister from nineteen ninety-eight to nineteen ninety-nine, and as Minister of Defence from nineteen ninety-nine to two thousand one.

In two thousand two, he joined The Daisy party and was instrumental in the founding of the Democratic Party in two thousand seven, retiring from politics in two thousand eight. Prior to his presidency, he served as a judge on the Constitutional Court of Italy from two thousand eleven to two thousand fifteen. His election to the presidency was marked by support from the centre-left coalition, and he was re-elected on January twenty-ninth, two thousand twenty-two, becoming only the second Italian president to achieve this milestone.
