Sergio Moro

Sergio Moro, born on August 1, 1972, is a prominent Brazilian jurist and politician, known for his significant contributions to the legal landscape of Brazil. He gained national prominence in 2015 as a lead judge in Operation Car Wash, a sweeping investigation into corruption and bribery that implicated numerous government officials and business leaders.

In October 2022, Moro was elected to the Federal Senate representing Paraná, marking a new chapter in his political career. His tenure as Minister of Justice and Public Security under President Jair Bolsonaro from 2019 to 2020 was marked by both acclaim and controversy. Nominated shortly after the 2018 elections, Moro's acceptance of the role was seen as a continuation of his commitment to fighting corruption.

However, his time in office was not without challenges. Allegations of partiality and judicial misconduct surfaced, particularly following the publication of leaked messages by journalist Glenn Greenwald. These revelations led to a significant public debate regarding his impartiality during the Operation Car Wash proceedings, especially concerning the case against former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

After resigning from the government in April 2020, citing undue interference from the President, Moro briefly worked with the firm Alvarez and Marsal. The Supreme Federal Court later resumed a habeas corpus trial questioning his impartiality, with some judges concluding that he had indeed exhibited bias.
