Sergio Osmeña Sr. was a distinguished Filipino lawyer and politician, born on September 9, 1878. He made history as the fourth president of the Philippines, serving from 1944 to 1946, and was the first vice president of the nation from 1935 to 1944. His presidency was notably brief, lasting just one year and three hundred days, yet it marked a significant chapter in Philippine history.
Osmeña's political journey began as the governor of Cebu from 1906 to 1907. He then became a member and the first speaker of the Philippine House of Representatives from 1907 to 1922, followed by a thirteen-year tenure as senator for the 10th senatorial district, where he also held the position of Senate president pro tempore. His partnership with Senate President Manuel L. Quezon in the 1935 presidential election was a pivotal moment, leading to their re-election in 1941.
Upon Quezon's unexpected passing in 1944, Osmeña ascended to the presidency at the age of sixty-five, becoming the first vice president to succeed to the presidency and the oldest individual to do so until Rodrigo Duterte took office in 2016. He was a prominent figure in the Nacionalista Party and is celebrated as the first Visayan president, earning the affectionate title of the 'Grand Old Man' of Cebu.
As the patriarch of the influential Osmeña family, his legacy continues through his son, former senator Sergio Osmeña Jr., and grandsons, including former senators Sergio Osmeña III and John Henry Osmeña, as well as former governor Lito Osmeña and current Cebu City vice mayor Tomas Osmeña.
