Sergiu Toma

Sergiu Toma, born on January twenty-ninth, nineteen eighty-seven, is a distinguished judoka who originally hails from Moldova but now represents the United Arab Emirates. His journey in judo has been marked by significant achievements, particularly at the 2016 Olympic Games where he competed in the eighty-one kilogram category. Toma made headlines by defeating Takanori Nagase, which propelled him into the semi-finals. Although he faced a setback against Khasan Khalmurzaev in that round, he showcased his resilience by clinching a bronze medal after triumphing over Matteo Marconcini.

Before his Olympic success, Toma represented Moldova in the two previous Olympic Games in 2008 and 2012, where he unfortunately faced early eliminations. His dedication to the sport was tested in 2008 when financial difficulties led him to contemplate retirement. However, he persevered and was later honored as the Moldovan Athlete of the Year in 2011, a testament to his talent and determination.

In pursuit of new opportunities, Toma relocated to the United Arab Emirates after the 2012 Olympics, joining five other Moldovan judoka and their national coach, Vasile Colta. This move marked a new chapter in his career, allowing him to continue competing at a high level and contributing to the sport in his new home.
