Sergiy Stakhovsky, born on January sixth, nineteen eighty-six, is a distinguished former professional tennis player from Ukraine. He embarked on his professional journey in two thousand three, primarily competing at the Challenger level from two thousand five to two thousand eight. Stakhovsky achieved remarkable career-high rankings, reaching World No. thirty-one in singles in September two thousand ten and No. thirty-three in doubles in June two thousand eleven.
His career is marked by a significant milestone when he clinched his first title in March two thousand eight as a lucky loser ranked No. two hundred nine. In a stunning upset, he defeated top seed Ivan Ljubičić in the final, making history as the first lucky loser to win a title since Christian Miniussi in nineteen ninety-one.
Stakhovsky is perhaps best remembered for his remarkable victory over Roger Federer, the eight-time Wimbledon champion, during the second round of the two thousand thirteen Wimbledon Championships. This victory ended Federer’s impressive streak of thirty-six consecutive major quarterfinal appearances, solidifying Stakhovsky's place in tennis history.
Beyond his achievements on the court, Sergiy is the elder brother of fellow tennis player Leonard Stakhovsky and was coached by Burghard Riehemann. After retiring from professional tennis in January two thousand twenty-two, he took a courageous step to join the Ukrainian Army in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
