Servatius of Tongeren

Servatius of Tongeren, born in the year four hundred, served as a distinguished Catholic priest and later ascended to the role of bishop in the ancient city of Tongeren, known in Latin as Atuatuca Tungrorum, the capital of the Tungri. His leadership and spiritual guidance were pivotal during a time of significant change and development in the region.

As a revered figure in the Christian community, Servatius became the patron saint of several towns, most notably Maastricht, as well as Schijndel and Grimbergen. His legacy continues to be celebrated, particularly on his feast day, which falls on May thirteenth each year.

In addition to his role as a bishop, Servatius is recognized as one of the Ice Saints, a group of saints traditionally associated with the cold weather of early spring. This connection highlights his enduring influence and the respect he garnered among the faithful.
