Seyyed Hossein Nasr

Seyyed Hossein Nasr, an eminent Iranian-American philosopher and Islamic scholar, was born on April seventh, nineteen thirty-three, in Tehran. He is currently a University Professor of Islamic studies at George Washington University. Nasr's academic journey began in the Imperial State of Iran and continued in the United States, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, followed by a Master of Arts in geology and geophysics, and a doctorate in the history of science from Harvard University.

In nineteen fifty-eight, Nasr returned to Iran, opting to decline teaching offers from prestigious institutions like MIT and Harvard. He took on the role of a professor of philosophy and Islamic sciences at Tehran University, where he also served as vice-chancellor and president of Aryamehr University. His contributions to the academic landscape included the establishment of the Imperial Iranian Academy of Philosophy at the behest of Empress Farah Pahlavi, which quickly became a leading center for philosophical discourse in the Islamic world.

The Islamic Revolution in nineteen seventy-nine compelled Nasr and his family to seek exile in the United States, where he has since dedicated his life to teaching Islamic sciences and philosophy. As a prominent figure in the Islamic philosophical tradition and a representative of the perennialist school of thought, he emphasizes the importance of resacralizing knowledge, which he argues has become disconnected from its divine origins in the modern era.

Nasr's extensive body of work, comprising over fifty books and more than five hundred articles, critiques contemporary worldviews while defending Islamic and perennialist principles. His writings, deeply influenced by Islam and Sufism, explore the essence of all orthodox religions, transcending their specific doctrines. Additionally, he advocates for an environmental philosophy rooted in Islamic environmentalism, promoting the resacralization of nature.
